Lean Healthcare Fundamentals

In this session, we'll explore the basics of achieving and sustaining enterprise-wide Lean in the healthcare industry. We'll review five rules of lean DNA: 1) the standard work that governs all lean activities; 2) the pathways of communication; 3) the flow of patients, material, and information; 4) the scientific method that governs all changes to standard work; and 5) the Socratic method that guides lean leaders.

Value Stream Mapping

This module will take you through a step-by-step method of value stream mapping and story boarding. Visual Healthcare (5S+2)

Learn the principles and techniques needed to apply 5S and establish visual management systems to improve workplace communication and ensure adherence to standards. This module will teach you how to document and share information systematically about daily healthcare production problems, abnormalities, waste, and unsafe conditions through visual display and controls so that everyone understands at a glance whether healthcare processes are in or out of control.

Self-Directed Work Teams

In this interactive workshop, participants will receive a lively overview of the key elements necessary to create and sustain a self directed, high performance work team. Standard Work

Standard work is central to achieving and sustaining the Lean healthcare enterprise. By definition Standard Work demands adherence to today's best healthcare practices and must be imbedded in all we do, from standard operations in the operating room to standardized policies and procedures. In healthcare operations, standard work is a key element in the elimination of waste, improvement of quality, providing better access to healthcare and in sustaining one’s improvement efforts. Absent of standard work there can be no Lean. Guided by a classroom simulation, participants will use a proven methodology to conduct a time study, develop a standard procedure, and then apply document control and visual workplace principles and techniques to train others in their new standard work.

How to Run a Kaizen Promotion Office

First documented in Hirano’s legendary "JIT Implementation Manual", the Kaizen Promotion Office has proven to be an indispensable tool of successful lean implementations. In this module, learn how to clearly define the roles of sponsors, process owners, team leaders, and team members, and how to conduct short weekly and monthly kaizen reviews that focus like a laser beam on the process improvements that are critical to patient safety and the bottom line.

Lean in the Emergency Department

From Oldskool to Lean in the Emergency Department…As part of the management team of Oldskool Medical Center you have been tasked with making improvements in patient satisfaction and the facilities ability to serve the community. The team decides to begin its efforts in the Emergency Department. This is the scenario of this simulation based session which demonstrates the flow of patients through the emergency room. Using Toyota’s 7 Forms of Waste, improvements in patient and information flow are made at each stage of the simulation. This session will demonstrate many techniques you can use in your own facilities.

Strategic Planning and Project Management Using the A3 System

The fundamental purposes of hoshin kanri (strategic management) action in a Lean enterprise is to focus a company's improvement efforts on a small number of very well defined initiatives to align and mobilize strategic business units, divisions, departments, and all supporting personnel in the transformation process. In this module, we'll present a proven business renewal planning and deployment process that utilizes Toyota’s famous A3 system of documentation and knowledge management. Learn how to incorporate your strategic priorities into daily work at every level in your healthcare organization. During the workshop, we will review the critical role of project management and the steps necessary to position a well-defined Lean project management process.
